Official Art House Theater Day 2018 Poster

Art House Theater Day is pleased to announce the addition of "A Matter of Life and Death" (aka Stairway to Heaven) to the 2018 programming slate. Presented in partnership with Sony Pictures Repertory – brand new 4K restoration of 1946 Powell and Pressburger film, with special introduction from Thelma Schoonmaker. Reality and fantasy are disarmingly commingled in this superb film about a WWII pilot who claims he was accidentally chosen to die and must now plead for his life in a heavenly court. The pilot gets on the radio and shares what he believes to be his last words with an American Women’s Army Corps, with whom he falls hopelessly in love. This 2017 4K restoration will include a special introduction from New York City’s Film Forum with Thelma Schoonmaker, famed Academy Awardâ winning editor (RAGING BULL, THE AVIATOR, THE DEPARTED) and widow of Michael Powell.

A LETTER BY GARY MEYER Do you remember your first Art Film Experience?
Mine was an accident. I was about eleven years old. Our family was in San Francisco and it was my turn to decide what we would do that evening. I loved movies and was an amateur magician. The decision was easy when I looked at the movie guide in the San Francisco Chronicle. A film called The Magician was playing at the Esquire Theatre on a double bill with something named Wild Strawberries.
